Sharing a series of unfiltered selfies with her almost five million followers, the actress demonstrates that there’s beauty in being honest

<a href="https://www.lofficielsingapore.com/fashion/from-grace-kelly-to-elle-fanning-the-best-moments-on-the-cannes-red-carpet">Elle Fanning</a>&rsquo;s flawless, porcelain skin is enough to induce envy in the best of us &ndash; just take a look at her red carpet appearances on the <a href="https://www.lofficielsingapore.com/fashion/dark-matter-ralph-russo-for-maleficent-mistress-of-evil">Maleficent</a> press tour and you&rsquo;ll understand why she was cast as Sleeping Beauty. But now, the actress is getting real about her skin struggles (stars, they really are just like us!).

Sharing a series of candid, unfiltered selfies on Instagram earlier this week, each zooming in on her ostensibly blush-dusted eyelids, the 22-year-old captioned the post, &ldquo;Eczema, but make it eye shadow&rdquo;, accompanied by a goofy-faced emoji. Seen wearing a simple white top and dainty gold jewellery with her golden tresses pulled back in a half-up ponytail, you&rsquo;d be forgiven for thinking Fanning&rsquo;s snapshots are merely another celebrity makeup moment.

However, a quick scroll through the comments section reveals the real impact of her daringly honest post. &ldquo;I feel seen,&rdquo; wrote fellow actress Rachel Brosnahan, and stylist Karla Welch added, &ldquo;My melasma is my blush!&rdquo; One of Fanning&rsquo;s fans expressed her sentiments with &ldquo;Thank you for posting this! I struggle with eczema and it hurts my self-esteem. It&rsquo;s so refreshing seeing public figures without the filters and makeup to show that we are all human.&rdquo;

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a genetic condition where the skin barrier doesn&rsquo;t function as well as it should, leading to dry, itchy and sensitive skin as well as small bumps and red, scaly patches. There is currently no cure for eczema, although flare-ups (caused by <a href="https://www.lofficielsingapore.com/beauty/here-are-the-soothing-skincare-solutions-to-stressed-out-skin">stress</a>, pollen, dust, soap and other environmental irritants) can be managed through topical medications, phototherapy, immunosuppressants and the like, depending on the severity of the condition. Moisturisers containing hyaluronic acid and skin-repairing ceramics can also help to alleviate the symptoms, while Fanning herself swears by oatmeal baths.
