To Tupitsyna, "uniqueness is more important than conformity to standards"

This December, we shine the spotlight on beauty creators who have stood out to us in their own unique ways this year. Here, Anastasia Tupitsyna tells us about her relationship with beauty, how 2022 has treated her, and what she looks forward to in the new year.

Some would say that Russian makeup artist and creator <a href="https://www.instagram.com/anastasile/">Anastasia Tupitsyna</a> needs no introduction. If you&rsquo;ve spent most of the year scrolling through TikTok, chances are you&rsquo;ve seen Tupitsyna turn up on your &ldquo;For You Page&rdquo; with her studio-quality makeup tutorials and transition videos.
The 24-year-old now has millions of followers on her social media platforms, which further proves that she&rsquo;s a force to be reckoned with in the beauty sphere now. Her videos do so well that she&rsquo;s even gotten the attention of Lady Gaga, with the singer commenting on one of Tupitsyna&rsquo;s most popular videos.

&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve always liked makeup,&rdquo; explains the creator. &ldquo;I started to get into it when I was 14 years old. I used to come home after school and put on my mum's makeup just to take some nice pictures when no one was looking.&rdquo; Now, Tupitsyna has ventured into beauty content creation full-time, spending most of her days working on bettering her skills in this field.
&ldquo;I usually create a few videos with the same makeup look in one day, namely transitions and tutorials,&rdquo; she tells us. &ldquo;Setting up the studio, doing my makeup, and filming takes over five to seven hours. After this, I do post-editing. It usually takes a few days for me to produce three to four videos.&rdquo;

Many of your makeup videos have gone viral, capturing the attention of celebrities like Lady Gaga. How validating is it to receive such praise for your videos?
It means a lot to me to get people's support for the work I do. Of course, when legends like Lady Gaga pay attention to my videos, I really appreciate it. It gives me the confidence to do everything right.
Which part of content creation do you love the most? 
Seeing it all come together. Because once I&rsquo;ve prepared my makeup and hair, and coupled with beautiful lighting and great music, I can already see the result. This is when I feel that I am the most confident, even if I am very tired after six hours of shooting.

How would you describe your makeup style? 
I think my makeup style can be described as vibrant, and also very commercial. I love bold contouring and blush, and expressive eyes and lips. I rarely do grim or festival makeup. To be honest, I like more feminine and sensual looks.
Do you have a favourite makeup look from this year? 
It's hard to pick a favourite look as I put a lot of effort into every single one. I also try to do something new and surprising every time.

Tell us about how the past year has been for you. 
I gained a lot of subscribers over the past year and, of course, it had an effect on my life. I became more recognisable. People recognise me all over the world and ask to take photos with me. They usually say that they adore my videos and I inspire them a lot. This inspires me.
Has your perception of beauty changed over the years? 
Yes and no. I've always looked up to beauty ideals in icons like Angelina Jolie or Monica Bellucci, but over the years, I have realised more and more that beauty is in everyone. I love myself with or without makeup &mdash; with acne or bruising under the eyes. After all, uniqueness is more important than conformity to standards.
What are you looking forward to in the new year? 
I hope that next year will bring me more than this one. I will try to work on and develop my skills further. Now I am planning to move to a new country, which I hope will give a boost to my career.
