All About Dental Jewellery, The Latest Beauty Trend Taking Over Instagram and TikTok
This controversial trend was originally a symbol of the 90s and the beginning of the 2000s, and is fast making a big comeback this year. Impactful and unexpected, dental jewellery has been spotted on the likes of Hailey Bieber and Adwoah Aboah. The trend involves placing a gem, stone, or other type of jewellery right onto a tooth in your mouth. A more minimalist alternative to grillz (tooth grids), this semi-permanent accessory is making its rounds goothrough TikTok and Instagram at the moment.
But how does it actually work, and how long does it last for? Ahead, we speak to Thevy, owner of popular Parisian studio Le Triptych, with a diverse clientile including influencer and model Clara Berry on everything we need to know about this nostalgic trend.
When did you start offering dental jewellery services at Le Triptych?
I started in December 2020.
Did you notice a return of this very “2000s” trend and if so, how do you explain it?
Absolutely! With the return of the crop top, wide baggy pants and all this style inspired by pop culture icons of the 2000s, the resurgence of dental jewellery was inevitable.
Describe the installation procedure and your technique?
Dental jewellery is placed in like a dental appliance. First, the composite is deposited on the desired location on your tooth, and the jewel selected by the client is placed, and then catalysed using a UV lamp.
What is the lifespan of the jewel on the tooth?
Their longevity is uncertain depending on the acidity of the person's saliva, but as a general rule they can last a few months.
Maintenance advice to extend this longevity?
At all costs, avoid eating foods that are too hard like apples, sandwiches, or too sticky like caramel or chewing gum. Brushing teeth should be done gently. You should also avoid consuming drinks that are too hot or too cold.
How do you personalize the choice of jewellery and its installation according to the client's style, or even their teeth?
As soon as they walk into my salon, my clients already know what jewellery they want and where they want to position it. In 90% of cases, the position works very well. The remaining 10% is due to the shape of the tooth, sometimes it may be too bulging for the jewel to adhere to it. The entire surface of the jewel must be in contact with the tooth to guarantee optimal placement and longevity.
How would you describe the style of your clientele?
Honestly, I have a very diverse clientele. We go from the client who prefers to opt for something very discreet to avoid being found out by his parents, to people who want real bling-bling and who do not hesitate to put it everywhere! I take care of both mothers and fashion experts who run all the fashion weeks and wear very quirky looks.
The trend to have dental jewellery yourself at home has taken over social media, including TikTok - is it safe to have a piece of jewelry at home? If so, what products do you recommend?
In my opinion, it is not safe at all. As with any specialty, everyone masters their job: let the professionals do it, it's much more successful and reassuring for the customer.
