The skunk stripe is the next generation of chunky highlights, a popular hair trend pioneered by girls of the late '90s to early noughties. Perhaps the most popular early iteration of chunky highlights belonged to Christina Aguilera, with her platinum blonde hair and thick strands of black in between: the pop-culture predecessor to the modern skunk stripe.

The skunk stripe is accessible to a number of hair types, versatile in style, and low maintenance. By dyeing a strand (or strands) of dark or coloured hair in a contrasting light or bright colour, the skunk stripe is easily achieved and can be created in a variety of ways that suit your personal aesthetic. Opt for dyeing two layered strands, curtain bangs (a staple of e-girl style), the paralleled areas of the contrast shade, a peek-a-boo style in the back, or a single standout streak to lay among a dark canvas of hair.
