The 2023 <a href="https://www.lofficielsingapore.com/fashion/red-carpet-looks-best-dressed-cannes-festival-2022" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cannes Film Festival</a> will honor the late behind-the-scenes cinematic force, Tom Luddy. Always a ritzy affair filled with A-list screenings, glamorous parties, and French Riviera views, the festivities will take place from May 16 to May 27. The filmmakers are a mixed bag of festival regulars and newcomers, with some rookies including Karim Ainouz of Firebrand and Tran Anh Hung of La Passion de Dodin Bouffant.
Although difficult to live up to the fanfare surrounding last year&rsquo;s Top Gun: Maverick, the festival finale film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has all the makings of a blockbuster hit. Other notable titles include Wes Anderson&rsquo;s Asteroid City, Steve McQueen&rsquo;s Occupied City, and Martin Scorsese&rsquo;s Killers of the Flower Moon, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Of particular interest is Sam Levinson&rsquo;s HBO series The Idol, a drama featuring&nbsp;Lily-Rose Depp and Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weekend.&nbsp;
Of the 52 titles making their debut, 19 are confirmed to be in competition. One standout is Jeunesse by Wang Bing, the first documentary&nbsp;to compete since 2004. Six of the festival&rsquo;s competition films are created by women&mdash;an all-time record. Several of these titles include La Chimera (Alice Rohrwacher), Club Zero (Jessica Hausner), Last Summer (Catherine Breillat), and&nbsp;Banel et Adama&nbsp;(Ramata-Toulaye Sy).
Undoubtedly the biggest change seen this year is an increase in <a href="https://www.lofficielsingapore.com/culture/kering-festival-de-cannes-honour-michelle-yeoh-2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener">diversity</a>. The festival, which has been faulted for a lack of representation in the past, includes a refreshingly global lineup, with films hailing from Mongolia, Senegal and Iran, Asia, and North Africa.
