Gucci Cosmogonie: A Sky Full of Crystals

All-over sequins and crystals glimmered at the Cruise runway show presented in Andria, Italy.

Inspired by German philosopher Walter Benjamin’s life as a collector of quotations, Alessandro Michele’s latest Gucci presentation for Cruise 2023 was a show powered by the mythological and the mystical. Shown at Castel del Monte, the poetic constellation of looks draw on the assemblage of thoughts and the forming of connections between a cosmic array of ideas.

The collection, which comprised just over 100 looks, created a conversation for fashion and for larger schools of thought. Benjamin’s innate ability to piece together and reconstruct shards of ideas was a core source of inspiration for Michele. When the looks from the collection were unveiled, it was clear Michele was illuminating historical references in an ordered disorderly manner.

With the Cruise 2023 collection, a key thread running through the show was the “incendiary shimmer”, as described by Michele. Dresses peppered with delicate crystals and colourful sequins floated out around the borderlines of the Italian castle. The sparkly details twinkled along the runway, mimicking starlight in the night sky; specks of crystals dot the tiered gowns and sheer crinolines.

Gucci’s grand exploration of the galaxies is one for the books. Each glistening character on the runway provokes, breaking and reworking the meaning of fashion through the eyes of Michele.
