 The Fall 2019 runways were a mixed bag of colours, textures and subcultures. Here’s our guide to keeping up with this season’s trends.

Spikes and Spunk

Like dominatrixes, punks are fond of their leather jackets and chains too. Their rebellious spirit was felt across the runway shows of Louis Vuitton and Marine Serre. Houndstooth was a key fabric at Gucci and Celine; over at Dior, models sported tartan as a nod to Teddy girls, punk&rsquo;s precursors.&nbsp;

Rainbow Vision

There was also the other end of the spectrum: brands went full Technicolour, with orange being a particularly popular shade. Even the Fendi show, the first since Karl Lagerfeld&rsquo;s passing, had splashes of yellow and pink. Jacquemus and Versace both made the case for (tasteful) polychromatic ensembles, but you can also inject colour through two of Fall 2019&rsquo;s top accessories: tights and long gloves.

Whips and Chains

This season, fashion also got a little kinky. The dominatrix look &ndash; black leather and vinyl, corsets and chains &ndash; was very much in. Bottega Veneta, Celine and Herm&egrave;s suggested stepping out dressed head-to-toe in leather, especially in the season-favourite trench coat. Versace&rsquo;s and Palm Angel&rsquo;s takes were a lot more revealing, featuring cinched waists, sky-high heels and lots of leg.

Paint It Black

Goths had a surprisingly huge influence this season, most notably at Prada&rsquo;s Frankenstein-inspired show. Simone Rocha and Alexander McQueen shared Prada&rsquo;s fixation on dark romance. Many brands sent out looks entirely in the goths&rsquo; favourite colour instead; even the usually joyous Valentino runway had them. Look for items with Victorian or lace details, and complete your look with dark lipstick like the models at Louis Vuitton.
