The Japanese sportswear expert has reworked its classic Corsair design to include a layer of fuzeGEL in the sole unit for improved shock absorption and joint protection

Few sneakers have as colourful a history as the Tiger Corsair from Onitsuka Tiger. The shoe got its start during the late &lsquo;60s, when a young Phil Knight and his track coach Bill Bowerman entered into a partnership with Onitsuka to bring the brand&rsquo;s hit products to the American market. With his expertise in the athletics, Bowerman created the prototype of a new runner that combined the best features of two existing models, the Mexico and the Marup, and so, a legend was born. Comfortable, light, and with a wedge of EVA in the extra-thick soles for superior shock absorbance, the sneakers were an instant success, and kickstarted the jogging boom of the 1970s. Initially dubbed the Aztec in reference to the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico, its name was changed to the Cortez, and then again to the Corsair when Knight and Bowerman parted ways with the Japanese sportswear specialist.

This year, almost half a century from its debut, Onitsuka Tiger has launched a new sneaker edition based on the original design, called the Tiger Corsair EX. While its classic retro shape is preserved, the sole unit has been updated to include a uniquely developed shock absorber, the fuzeGEL, which is inserted between the mid and outer sole for better shock absorption, foot cushioning, and joint protection. Ortholite is also used for the inner sole to ensure optimal comfort all day long.

And just like the OG, the refreshed Tiger Corsair EX is replete with slick street-style credentials. Two versions of the upper are on offer, a smooth leather in red, navy, and white with contrasting Tiger stripes, and a combination of suede and textile in grey, navy, and yellow with embroidered Tiger stripes in blue, orange, and black, respectively.
