See the mystique of the North African kingdom through the eyes of Kate Spade’s nomadic Creative Director and find out how it inspired the brand’s latest collection

<p>Deborah Lloyd, creative director of Kate Spade New York, has a unique way of approaching each collection. Before she commences and works on the elaborate design process, Lloyd carefully sifts through her mood board &ndash; a selection of amazing travel images and photographic keepsakes from her last vacation. &ldquo;For summer, we are heading to Mexico. Our collection will be inspired by the artful flair of Frida Kahlo, carnations, traditional Mexican wedding dresses, hummingbirds, pi&ntilde;atas, cacti and a few friendly desert-dwelling critters eliciting a celebratory mood,&rdquo; says Lloyd.</p>

<p>While that&rsquo;s something we can&rsquo;t wait to see, we&rsquo;re thrilled with the brand&rsquo;s current Spring collection. Here, Lloyd shares with us the whimsical memories from a trip to Morocco that inspired it.</p>

“In Morocco, a camel transports people and goods. In New York City, a taxi does that. We took this ethos and presented it in a fun and playful way. The chemistry between Fernanda and the camel was magical. It was palpable to passersby and created a spontaneous moment of joy throughout the shoot. It made everyone’s day!” 

“I’ve been to Morocco twice and I can’t wait to go back! My recent visit was different because the trip was focused on inspiring a collection. I kept a personal travel diary and later, I couldn’t believe how many things I managed to see and do.”

“I particularly love our camel bag. It has so much personality and I’m just happy to see him every day. He was inspired directly from a camel ride in the desert – that was quite an experience.”

“Travel is my greatest source of inspiration. I would love to bring my husband to Morocco as he has never been there. Marrakech is a city of many facets and the main square, Jemaa el Fna, is a great starting point. It’s a cultural heritage site and is always buzzing with local characters in traditional costumes.”

“For this season, I really wanted to focus on a collection that highlights vibrant colours and vivid patterns. I knew Morocco would be the perfect place. Our pair of Pretty Poms Statement Tassel earrings is an item to buy for the season. Tassels are the new bow!”
