By taking over the Circolo Filologico, the oldest cultural association in Milan, the brand reaffirmed its commitment to "contemporary thought". Here, luxury is not worn, it is discussed.
The 2026 edition, titled "Politics of Desire", promised to be the most audacious yet. The premise is clear: desire is not merely a private matter; it is a force that determines the right to self-determination. An act of resistance against the invisible structures that still govern our lives.&nbsp;At the centre of this intellectual arena, two tutelary figures have faced each other across the decades: the French Nobel Prize winner, Annie Ernaux, and the icon of African literature, Ama Ata Aidoo. Two women who, in their own ways, have laid bare the mechanisms of power within the private sphere.

To open this first day, Lou Stoppard takes the floor. The British writer and curator moderates a tense but necessary discussion about Annie Ernaux's M&eacute;moire de fille. Between sessions, she shares her analysis of what "desire" means in 2026.
 L'OFFICIEL: To open this conversation, how would you define "female desire" today, in light of the voices gathered here? Lou Stoppard: I think that, as the voices gathered here suggest, female desire is complex, nuanced, and indefinable.
L'O: In M&eacute;moire de fille, the memory of desire is inseparable from shame: how does this tension resonate with the contemporary writings of Megan Nolan or Lea Melandri? LS: Shame and desire are recurring themes in Annie Ernaux's work: the way they intertwine, the way they diverge. I think what unites the writers you mention is how they all broke taboos about what women are supposed to write. One of the central theses of Lea's work is that our private lives are, in reality, profoundly political.
The fact that Ernaux constantly returns to the young woman she once was, and to her memories, is part of this approach: it helps us dismantle the invisible structures that usually silence women. Megan's work also explores what female writers typically leave unsaid. In Acts of Despair, her protagonist seeks a form of self-annihilation through a man. This reminds me of another of Ernaux's texts, Simple Passion, which details an obsessive affair.&nbsp;"From September of last year," she writes, "I did nothing but wait for a man: for him to call me and come to my place." These are representations of waiting, obsession, and, once again, shame, that are rarely seen in literature.
L'O: Annie Ernaux's book is part of a form of writing based on the gap between lived experience and analysis: how does this literary gesture engage with other forms of autofiction or personal narratives today? LS: The form used by Ernaux is revolutionary and unique: this is what makes her a major influence on so many contemporary writers. It is indefinable, defying both genres and formal conventions, whether it be "autofiction" or "memoirs". I think this liberation is very inspiring for today's authors. Its form also reflects memory: our minds navigate between fiction and reality, between what is vague and what is definable.
L'O: In a context such as the Miu Miu Literary Club, what difference does it make to think about these texts within a space linked to fashion and image? LS: I think the Miu Miu Literary Club aims to support and highlight women's writing and self-expression. It's about providing a platform for debate and discussion. That said, it's interesting to note that imagery and photography are important themes in Ernaux's work; indeed, her book contains magnificent scenes describing clothing or shopping trips &mdash;with their ups and downs. She is therefore a writer perfectly suited to be explored in this context.

Wednesday, April 22 : Ernaux's legacy. Alongside Lou Stoppard, journalist Annabelle Hirsch and feminist thinker L&eacute;a Melandri explore how memory becomes an act of self-ownership. In the evening, theorist Olga Goriunova astounds the audience with her lecture on "Desire After AI", analysing how our algorithms now shape our fantasies.
Thursday, April 23: Political Negotiation. The focus shifts to Ama Ata Aidoo's Desires for Change. Moderator Nadia Beard orchestrates a dialogue between Way&eacute;tu Moore and anthropologist Gloria Wekker on how women negotiate their independence within patriarchal and postcolonial structures. The day concludes with a crucial question posed by Katherine Angel: "How do we talk about consent?", advocating for an ethics of shared vulnerability.
Friday, April 24 : Reading as a refuge. To close the event on April 24, the Circolo Filologico is transformed into a vast public reading room. There, visitors can discover Rosi Braidotti's "Curated Library," a selection of titles that, throughout the centuries, have allowed women to assert their desires and ideals.
By placing desire at the heart of the political conversation,&nbsp;Miu Miu is not simply following the trend; it is defining the cultural dialogue of tomorrow. In the corridors of the Circolo Filologico, between two paperback editions and a musical performance, one understands that a woman's most beautiful adornment remains, definitively, her own voice.
