The mixie is a hybrid hairstyle between mullet and pixie that's causing a fever on social networks. And soon, it'll be everywhere else in 2022!

The '70s are having a major resurgence this decade. During the past two years, thinning bangs, shags, and even mullets have dominated social media and will continue to be even more popular in 2022. Now, get ready for a new pixie-mullet hairstyle called the Mixie, currently trending on Instagram and TikTok.
If you follow the tags #pixiemullet, #mulletpixie, and or similar on TikTok, you'll see at least 100 videos with hundreds of thousands of views for each tag. In fact, I'm willing to bet that the "mixie," as I've decided to nickname it, will be the official hairstyle of 2022.&nbsp;

&ldquo;I've definitely noticed [this trend is happening], and I'm a fan of it," says Luis Miller, a New York City-based hairstylist. "I actually saw that months ago &ndash; because I travel a lot, I had a chance to see them before they became mainstream." Even in Missouri, where hairstylist Colissa Nole works, the trend is gaining traction. "Trends like this are pervasive on social media and are driving a lot of traffic because people are sharing them 10 times more than before," she explains.

Miller primarily works as a hair extension specialist, so he doesn't get many requests for a mixie cut &ndash; but Nole says she does get requests for this pattern at least once a week. For Brooklyn-based hairstylist Andy Judd, it's a different story altogether. Take a look at Instagram and you'll notice that mullet-style fish are highly demanded among his clientele, and he's very pleased. "The best thing about the pixie-mullet hybrid is, say like Hannah Montana &ndash; you get the best of both worlds," he laughs and says. Basically, you get the chic playfulness of the standard pixie haircut with the rock-and-roll side of the mullet.&nbsp;

In terms of mixie cut, it&#39;s pretty much the same as the standard mullet, just with a lower side at the back. Choosing exactly how short you want in the back is the first step, and the rest is shaped to that length and the style of fringe you want. &quot;First I would determine the desired length for the back. From there, it&#39;s all basically 90-degree cut to the shape of the head,&quot; explains Miller. As Nole describes it, &quot;it&#39;s theoretically a haircut that overlaps with layers of other medium-length hair.&quot; She added that there is a difference between a short front and a long back, and that &quot;its real beauty depends on the breaking.&quot;

It's no surprise to hear that hairstyles like this are booming, especially with Gen Z and millennials. First, it's purpose-built, which means it doesn't require a lot of fuss in everyday styling. &ldquo;These styles really showcase clutter without looking unprofessional,&rdquo; recalls Cole.
While this short haircut and cut can be intimidating to more conservative people, young people are flocking to them to express themselves powerfully. &ldquo;This new pixie-mullet is super creative, empowers, and shows off all your beautiful features &ndash; eyes, cheekbones, jawline,&rdquo; says Miller. "It's rebellious and fierce."

Its growing popularity could also be the first step towards a super-short hairstyle. &ldquo;If you&rsquo;re thinking about cutting long hair off,&rdquo; explains Judd, &ldquo;a pixie cut in the front and length in the back will help you introduce short hair with a natural cut.&rdquo;
Miller adds that past beauty trends will always return as well, making this retro comeback all the more obvious. And the mullet-pixie, pixie-mullet, mixie, or whatever you choose to call it is going to be a renaissance in 2022. In fact, it's already begun. So if you're looking for a fresh take on the classic to try on your next date, look no further.
